The Balaji temple located in Chilkur, famously known as Chilkur Balaji Temple is on the banks of Osman Sagar Lake. The temple is about 25 to 30 kilometres away from Hyderabad. It is one of the famous temples in and around Hyderabad and is also known as Visa god as most of the devotees who visit here pray for Visa’s for going abroad and many of their dreams do come true.
It is one of the oldest temple which was built in 17th century during the period of Akkana and Madanna. Based on the history of the temple, a person who was a big devotee to Lord Venkateshwara used to visit the Tirumala regularly. He was unable to visit Tirumala due to some health issues. One day, Lord Venkateshwara appeared in his dreams and asked him not to worry and to find his Idol in the nearby forest. He went to that place had started digging as told by the Lord. While diiging the ground, he accidentally hit the idol below the chin and on the Chest with an axe which can be seen at present time also.
There is no Hundi for offerings in the temple. There is a belief that a person who visits the temple and do 11 Circumambulations (pradakshinas, rounds around Temple) and then expresses the wish promising to take another 108 pradakshinas if his or her wish is fullfilled. This is regularly followed by the people who has wish for Visa.
